We focus on building control of the horse’s body from the ground, creating understanding before pressure, and developing a calm, thinking partner ready for their first rides.
From Horse Starting & Further Education to Competition Horse Training & Competing - See how we can help you.
Building relationships is foundational, not optional.
Horse starting has evolved into a discipline in its own right, requiring a high level of skill, timing, and feel. While horses can be restarted, they are only ever given one true first start. Horses are forgiving, but they do not forget - making it our responsibility to give each horse a foundation built on clarity and confidence, not one they must learn to overcome.
Services include:
GROUND CONTROL:
-Weanling handling
-Halter ground control
-Long reining
-Horse Starting under saddle
-Advancing Education
-Competition preparation
-Cow Horse Training
-Campaigning horses
"I have been associated with HH for over a decade now and have witnessed him start and train dozens of horses. I have recommended him to many horse owners over the years and have always received great feedback. Donal is very conscientious and approaches each horse with a kindness and an understanding that every horse owner should appreciate. His honesty and integrity will serve him well in an industry where these traits are a must." Sean O'Hanlon (O'Hanlon Equine)

specialised
clinics
We offer a range of specialised clinics throughout the year, both at our home base and across Australia.
A clinic setting accelerates learning by combining hands-on experience with observation.
Attendees not only recieve direct, individual feedback but also gain insight from watching others work through similar challenges. This broader exposure builds timing, feel, and decision-making, the key elements of effective horsemanship that are difficult to develop in isolation.
The Types of Clinics we offer:
- Long Reining
- Body control under saddle
- Liberty (Beginner, intermediate, Advanced)
-Horse starting preparation
-Horse starting (5 day clinic)
-Introduction to cattle with Bison
-Colt starting for competition (3 day clinic)

FAQ
How Do I host a HH Clinic at my horse facility?
If you would like to host a clinic at your own facility, we welcome your enquiry. Please submit a contact form and we will be in touch with further information.
How long will it take to start my horse?
Typically 6–8 weeks, however this can vary depending on the individual horse. Our focus is on setting your horse up for the long term - not just the first few weeks, allowing them the time to properly process and learn without unnecessary stress
Can I watch my horse being trained?
Absolutely! We encourage it, you are welcome to attend a weekly session while your horse is in training to watch it's progress. We will also give you a complimentary lesson prior to your horse returning home with you.
What do I need to bring with my horse when dropping off for Training?
Nothing - If you would like your horse rugged, please bring that along, everything else will be taken care of.
Can I bring my own feed?
Short answer — generally no.
We don’t use external feeds as a rule, though there may be the occasional exception where it makes sense.
We work closely with Pryde’s to run a feeding program designed specifically for horses in training. It’s something we review regularly with their team to make sure every horse is getting what they need for the work they’re doing.
With around 60 horses coming through each year—plus Donal’s own and sale horses—we’ve had zero issues over the past five years using this system and prioritising roughage. We trust it because it works.
There’s also a practical side to it. With up to five horses in work at a time, all on different routines, running multiple individual feed programs just isn’t realistic. Keeping everything consistent means we can manage feeds properly and give every horse the same high standard of care.
At the end of the day, our focus is simple: healthy horses that perform well—and this program supports that.
What can I cover in my private Lessons?
Donal tailor's these lessons to you, for you to work on what you need. Ground work, ridden work, liberty, basic cattle work foundations. Lessons with Bison is also available at a higher rate.
Can my friend and I do a lesson together?
Yes - we offer semi private & group Lesson rates
